Weekend of Prayerful Affirmation and Action for the Safety of Clinic Workers
October 16-18, 2009
Public policy action
As we honor Dr. George Tiller’s memory and pray for the safety of clinic workers nationwide, we are mindful of the cause they are fighting for: ensuring access for all women to all reproductive health services.
We must carry on the work of these everyday heroes by sounding our voices on healthcare reform. Right now, our elected representatives in Washington, D.C., are making important decisions on healthcare that will affect us all. They must know that as people of faith, we support a healthcare system that meets the needs of all Americans, including the reproductive health requirements of women. Abortion care should not be treated any differently than any other health care service. We want a system that respects women’s rights and meets the standards of justice and morality that our religions represent.
Reproductive health care is basic health care for women. It is wrong that women and clinic workers must risk their safety in pursuit of a medical need and a constitutional right. Our healthcare system desperately needs reform, and that reform must include provisions that protect reproductive healthcare and guarantee every woman access to a doctor. Our prayers this weekend are powerful. They can do even more if we extend them beyond the walls of our congregation and bring our message of justice for women to our elected representatives.
Please print out and circulate this petition requesting that health care reform legislation provide women with access to the full range of affordable reproductive health services including family planning, contraceptives, abortion and maternity care. The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice will ensure that these petitions are received by Members of congress.
