Statement of Reverend Dr. Carlton W. Veazey on the Death of Senator Edward Kennedy
August 26, 2009
The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice extends our deepest sympathy to the family of Senator Edward Kennedy, who died after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Senator Kennedy was a strong supporter of reproductive health care and rights, knowing that full equality is not possible unless women can make childbearing decisions with dignity and with access to all options. He launched a series of women's health initiatives, including protections against forced sterilizations of low-income women. He stood for strong constitutional protections - including equal protection and the right to privacy - and worked to ensure that the federal judiciary would respect those protections. He was instrumental in the passage of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, which has helped keep abortion providers and their patients safe. His tireless advocacy during more than 40 years in the Senate for the rights of women and health care providers will be missed.
A Roman Catholic, he was a public servant in the best tradition of social justice - a man who followed his conscience and a champion for the most vulnerable and needy among us. Ted Kennedy will live on in the memory of the nation for his dedication to bringing hope and justice to underserved populations.
