Educational Workshop

Check that Cheddar
Background/Rationale: Like many young people, African-American teen girls often lack financial goals and skills for managing their money or “cheddar.” They are prone to spend money on items such as clothes, manicures, hair styling, jewelry, tattoos and piercings. Black girls in low-income communities face additional challenges in that they often lack adult role models with good financial practices and they live in communities that are filled with predatory lending practices. In this activity girls explore their attitudes and beliefs about money and financial management and begin to determine their value system related to finances. Once they understand the values that drive their behavior, they will assess the possible long-term impact of the way they currently manage money. Finally, they identify alternative strategies for managing money wisely.
