Educational Workshop
Happy to be Nappy
Background/Rationale: Teenage girls often have difficulty accepting themselves and the way they look as they navigate through puberty and beyond. Girls in the African-American community face additional struggles due to messages about beauty from the mass media and from within the black community itself. It is common to hear girls say things like, “We don’t want to stand outside; we’ll get black.” “You have good hair.” Or “Your hair sure is nappy!” Issues such as skin color, hair texture, facial features, and size of butts are all huge sources of pain and striving for black girls who often spend a lot of money on hair styling, clothing, and other forms of grooming.
