Sharing Our Stories
Background/Rationale: Many African-American mothers and female caregivers are doing a phenomenal job of holding families together and raising their children, all too often without a father in the home. Some of these strong women were teen parents themselves and very much want their daughters to avoid some of the struggles they’ve had in their lives. When it comes to sexuality, many black mothers, like parents from other cultural backgrounds, want to keep their daughters safe. African-American parents have even more to fear because of the disproportionately high rates of sexually transmitted diseases (especially AIDS), adolescent pregnancy, and premature parenthood in the black community. In their concern for their daughter’s safety, black women sometimes offer harsh messages that hinder or challenge the girls’ ability to become adults who can make decisions in their own best interest and enjoy their sexuality on their own terms. This session is designed to help female caregivers explore what they were taught about sexuality, figure out how these early messages affected them, and plan and practice a positive conversation about sexuality with their daughters enabling them to establish themselves as parents responsible for their daughters sexual growth.
