Educational Workshop
Sister to Sister: HIV and AIDS
Background/Rationale: Rates of HIV & AIDS are disproportionately high in the African-American community. Washington DC, where the RCRC Generations program originated, has one of the highest rates among U.S. cities. In the U.S. rates of new HIV infections are highest among African-American women. This is of critical importance for girls and their female adult caregivers in the Generations program. African-American girls must understand that they and their sisters (teens & adults) are at risk, not because of who they are, but because of risk-taking behaviors. This activity demonstrates visually how easily HIV can spread without protection. It also explores why the rates of HIV and AIDS are so high in black communities and what black teen girls and women can do to reduce their risk.
