Educational Workshop

Spread the Word
Background/Rationale: Read any book about adolescent behavior and you are sure to discover a section on peer pressure. It is conceivably the most powerful force that teens must deal with during their adolescent years. It has the power to convince one girl to try her first cigarette or influence another to skip school. It is such a powerful influence because teens talk more openly and honestly to each other than they do to adults. After all, friends are less judgmental and many times they are sharing similar experiences. In the mind of many teenage girls, a peer gives advice because she wants to share information whereas adults give information because they want to control actions. The power of peer pressure does not always lead to negative behavior. When teens learn how to use peer pressure to positively influence others, the results are astounding.

The goal of this activity is to prepare your girls to use their influence positively through peer leadership. In practicing peer leadership activities the girls develop skills to inform others about topics they have discovered in your program, specifically HIV/AIDS. After completing this activity, the girls should be able to positively inform members of the community about HIV/AIDS, becoming a voice of information in their religious organizations, schools, and families.
