"Keeping it Real!" Sessions

Session 1
Sex and Sexuality: A Spiritual Gift from God (Genesis 1:26-31)
Goals and Objectives:

    State at least two reasons why it is important for African-American youth to engage in open dialogue about sexuality

    Define human sexuality as being more than sexual behavior

    Describe the connection between sexuality and spirituality
Session 2
It's a Family Affair: The Role of Family in Understanding Ourselves as Sexual Beings ( Ecclesiastes 3: 1& 7) 
Goals and Objectives:
    List at least two reasons why it is important for African-American youth to talk openly and honestly with their parents and caregivers about sexuality

    State at least two benefits of communicating with parents about sexuality

    Describe a spiritual approach to family communication about sexuality 

    Initiate a conversation about sexuality with a parent or caregiver
Session 3
Connecting with Spirit – Healthy Relationships (1st Corinthians 13:4-8a)
    Goals and Objectives:
    List at least two reasons why it is important for African-American youth to talk openly and honestly about healthy relationships

    Describe how to make a spiritual connection in relationships

    List at least five characteristics of healthy relationships

    Describe at least two skills that help build and maintain healthy relationships

Session 4
In Your Face: Media Messages About Sexuality (Romans 12: 1-2)

    Goals and Objectives:
    List at least two reasons why it is important for Black youth to talk openly and honestly about sexuality messages in Black popular culture and media 

    Describe how to critique media messages from a spiritual perspective

    Critically analyze a form of media, e.g., music video, song, etc.

    Initiate a conversation with an important adult about sexuality messages in African-American popular culture and the media

Session 5
The Freedom to Choose: Making Decisions About Sexuality (Proverbs 3:5-6)
    Goals and Objectives:
    State at least two reasons why it is important for Black youth to talk openly and honestly about sexual decision-making 

    Describe how to have a spiritual focus when making decisions about sexuality

    Apply a decision-making model to case studies involving African-American youth who are considering having sexual intercourse

    Initiate a conversation with a parent or caregiver about how to make decisions about sexual behavior

Session 6
Not in My Church: Combating Sexual Violence (Psalm 55:12-14)
    Goals and Objectives:
    Describe the prevalence and impact of sexual violence among teens and young adults

    Agree that sexual violence is unacceptable in society, immoral, and contrary to the will of God

    Define what is required for sexual consent to take place

    Initiate a conversation with a parent or caregiver about consent and sexual violence

Session 7
Doing the Right Thing: Promoting Justice (Micah 6:8)
    Goals and Objectives:
    Describe the impact of injustice related to sexuality

    State a biblical perspective on social justice

    State their values related to equal treatment regardless of gender, sexual orientation, and ability

    Write a brief “point of view” statement or “shout out” aimed at promoting justice for possible placement on the RCRC website  

    Initiate a conversation with a parent or caregiver about justice and sexuality

Session 8
The Influence of the Church (John 13:34-35)
    Goals and Objectives:
    Describe the past and present influence their church and its leaders have had on their understanding of sexuality

    Make recommendations to pastors and faith leaders about how best to teach and influence teens regarding sex and sexuality

    Articulate at least two faith/value statements about faith communities and sexuality education

    Initiate a conversation with a church leader about sexuality
