A Theology of Reproductive Justice Video Presentation
  • What does it mean to be a pro-choice person of faith?
  • What are the theologies and spiritual/scriptural resources in the Christian tradition that support belief in reproductive justice and comprehensive sexuality education? How are these issues addressed in different faith communities?
  • How do issues of reproductive justice intersect with a wide range of ministry settings?
  • If a woman from your congregation, chaplaincy or ministry comes to you and says, “I’m pregnant, and I don’t know if I’m ready to be, and I don’t know what to do…” what will you say? What pastoral care will you offer her?

We invite clergy and religious leaders, ordained or lay, who are wrestling with these questions or who simply wish to gain a deeper understanding of how reproductive justice connects to theology and how to take action around these issues, to view this video presentation. In this video presentation, Rev. Matthew Westfox, a United Church of Christ pastor and the Director of Interfaith Outreach for the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice will invite participants to step back from the sound bites and explore these issues theologically.  Through a Power Point presentation, facilitated discussion and building from his own grounding in the Christian tradition, Rev. Matthew Westfox presents a theology of reproductive justice that is based in biblical and theological traditions while also taking into account the full complexity of reproductive issues. The presentation addresses the issue not only in academic theological terms, but through the lens of how clergy and religious leaders can and should address reproductive justice issues in their own ministries, both prophetically and pastorally.

We hope this video will be the beginning of a larger discussion around these issues, and how you can get involved. If you are connected to an RCRC community, such as an affiliate or seminarian for choice group or local clergy network, we would love to help you set up a time to continue discussion of the questions raised in this video. If you are not already part of such a community, we will be happy to talk to you about how you can get involved in your congregation, in your community, or by working directly with us to help ensure reproductive justice throughout the nation. Further discussion about how to get involved will be found during this video presentation.
